Orthotics: A Conservative Way to Treat Heel Pain

While some heel problems are surgically treated, many can be treated conservatively, meaning without surgery.  There are a variety of non-surgical treatments that can be used to treat heel pain such as cortisone injections, exercise, and physical therapy.  Orthotics, which are custom molded inserts, are another way to treat heel pain.  Orthotics are worn under your heel and the arch of your foot.  These inserts provide support, realign your feet to a neutral or natural position to alleviate pain, restore balance, and relieve foot fatigue.  For athletes, orthotics can also improve sports performance.

Orthotics are especially beneficial for those who experience imbalances such as flat feet or high arches because, over time, they can correct these imbalances and alleviate the foot, leg, and back pain that may have resulted from such imbalances.  Research shoes that heel pain is often connected to these types of skeletal imbalances.  Flat feet or high arches cause the heel to be unstable during normal activities.  By compensating for imbalances, orthotics can relieve or even eliminate existing pain.  In addition, external skeletal misalignments such as "bow knees," in-toeing, or out-toeing can be treated with orthotics.

In addition, if you participate in any activities that place stress on your feet for extended periods of time orthotics may be beneficial to alleviate the pain that may result from these acitivities.  Orthotics can also be used to improve sports performance or to prevent sports injuries.

The best way to determine if orthotics are right for you is to make an appointment with us for an exam.
